Aniline leather tanning: how it is made?

The term "tanned leather" characterizes the leather that has undergone the specific treatment that is necessary to work and preserve this raw material. The working process is carried out in different ways depending on two main factors: the characteristics of leather at the beginning and the type of product you want to make with tanned leather. In any case, the aniline leather tanning process is critical to ensure the durability of the leather and to give to the material the characteristics suitable for the processing.

History and advantages of the tanning treatment

The leather tanning is a process that is performed down from ancient times: the processing techniques have matured from prehistoric throughout medieval ages up to the present day. Today tanned leathers are characterized by refined aesthetics and quality: this material, in other words, is perfect for creating accessories and other everyday items, which are used in the fashion world and in many other areas.

The three stages of the process: beamhouse operations, tanning and finishing

Although the tanning process is not always the same, it is possible to identify three main phases: the beamhouse operations, the tanning itself and finishing; between tanning and finishing, there can be other working like re-tanning, dyeing and fattening (greasing), ideal for giving special characteristics to leather. The phase of beamhouse operations includes the first operations to prepare the raw skin for the tanning process: this phase includes mechanical and chemical processing operations. Once ready, the skin can undergo the tanning process: the purpose of this processing is to obtain a stable organization of collagen fibers naturally present in the dermis. After leather tanning, the dry material undergoes other treatments that protect the surface and improve aesthetics.
