From the sale of raw leather material (intended as raw leather still to be tanned) until the finished product is obtained, the process is not as simple as one might think, especially if you want to achieve an excellent result. The choice of the starting raw is therefore a fundamental requirement.
The processing, production and sale of raw leather is a real art: it is necessary, for those who want to buy this material, to understand that there are different classifications that must be made for the subsequent sale. The skin is an organic material, which initially is covered by the hair on one side and with parts of fat or meat still present in the other; the first classification to make, therefore it is by the type of animal, by the origin and by the type of breeding. The most important discriminating factors are:
The choice based on these parameters is the task of the tannery, but it is always good to be informed also on these characteristics.
The most valuable skin, speaking of common breeding animals, is surely that of baby-calf, up to six months of age, raised in a stable, since totally free from wounds, wrinkles, excoriations and diseases and of North-European origin. The cheapest skins, on the other hand, are those of animals with a hump such as, for example, zebu, buffalo, camel, or animals bred in the wild, with branding or scars, grown in humid and warm areas with abundant presence of insects. Clearly, the latter are subject to open or scarred wounds, insect bites, signs of various kinds, cuts, etc., considerably reducing the usable surface of leather resulting in lower grades hides.
After the sale, raw leather goes through the tanning phase. The first phase is soaking and greening, where the skin is hydrated with water and enzymes. Then we move on to the hair-removal phase which is done with quicklime and sulphide, opening the pores and causing the hairs to fall. Then the skins are "purged", extracting the sulphides and the lime, leaving the fiber ready to receive chrome or vegetable tanning. After tanning, they proceed to the re-tanning and fattening phase, with eventual dyeing in cask, after which we pass to drying and to the subsequent softening and finishing operations, to then arrive at the finished leather, ready to be transformed into shoes, leather goods etc.
From the sale of raw leather to obtaining a finished product, the process is long and complex but above all a matter of craftsmanship: the tanning sector having as its subject a "living" material like leather has and will always have a non-standardizable part, a series of uncontrollable variables and therefore an "artisan" part in which the experience of man is required to obtain a result worthy of note.
If by rough leather we mean the raw leather just slaughtered or salted, it is necessary to be operators of the sector in order to process this type of material. If instead we are referring to a leather for raw leather that can be worked by hand by the craftsman and molded into a product of common use, the right place where to buy raw leather material is buyleatheronline.com.
